Clinical Rehabilitative Massage-Full Body-Part 1

This 16-hour course presents a systematic, anatomy-and-kinesiology-based approach to soft tissue treatment for pain and dysfunction. It teaches students to use clinical reasoning based on assessment and provides a solid foundation for applying rehabilitative massage techniques to a variety of tissue types and conditions. All demonstration and practice sessions are accompanied by clear visuals of the relevant anatomy.

The course covers concepts and goals in rehabilitative massage, a detailed review of the composition, characteristics, and common injuries and conditions affecting soft tissues, as well as an update on the science of pain and inflammation. Students will learn and practice a full spectrum of foundational and advanced techniques to address the myofascial system from the superficial to the deepest layers. These include techniques that utilize shortening or lengthening of tissues, client movement, and assisted stretching. There will be time to address specific client cases provided by participants.

  • Upper body- Part 2 Thoracocervical area and upper extremities (coming soon)

  • Lower body- Part 3 Lumbosacral area and lower extremities (coming soon)

Geriatric and Palliative Massage

This eight-hour class prepares students to work with the elderly population to address the general complaints that arise with the aging process. There will be a review of some of the common physiological changes that occur in this stage of life, particularly to the skin and the musculoskeletal system, as well as the most common conditions and pathologies in this population. These include fragility, general stiffness, range of motion limitations, and a variety of conditions including arthritis, old injuries, post-surgical scars and adhesions, and osteoporosis, among others. Ways of working with neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, and Alzheimer’s, as well as depression and anxiety, will be addressed. Students will learn effective adaptations to treatment, such as levels of pressure, pacing, use of props, working with the client in a variety of positions on the table, a recliner, or bed, with or without clothing, and with or without lubricant. Hygiene and safety concerns will be addressed, as well as communication style and the creation of a trusting, safe environment for working with the elderly.

Applied Ergonomics in Massage Therapy

This is a hands-on class in the application of advanced ergonomic and movement efficiency principles to massage therapy work. The class begins with a thorough kinesiological analysis of the neutral, protective positions for the spine, pelvis, and all the joints of the upper extremity. Students will learn to use safe body mechanics and energy-saving techniques to effortlessly facilitate force transmission while targeting specific body areas and tissues. They will practice these principles while working with a variety of client positions, using props and the client’s body weight for force transmission, using a variety of postures and anchor points around the table for stabilization and good mechanics, and applying techniques that prevent overuse of thumbs, fingers, wrists, and arms. They will work with a partner and receive personal supervision and feedback throughout the class. This workshop teaches students to work smarter, not harder, for a long, satisfying career.

Kinesio Taping® for Massage Therapists

The 8-hour Kinesio Taping® for Massage Therapists workshop covers basic principles of Kinesio Taping such as the characteristics of the tape, standard cuts, tension parameters, proper tape handling, application and removal, precautions, contraindications, and more. Participants learn and practice special screening and assessment techniques alongside common taping applications for fascia, muscle, tendon, and ligament, as well as the lymphatic/circulatory, mechanical, and space corrections. The practice sessions address a variety of upper and lower body conditions and ways in which the taping corrections are integrated into the therapist’s sessions. Students must take an online pre-course ahead of the in-person workshop.
